Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

1 nickel = $0.05 USD. To convert nickels to dollars, multiply by 0.05. 20 nickels = $1; 100 nickels = $5; 200 nickels = $10. Equivalently, 1 nickel = 5 pennies = ½ a dime = ⅕ of a quarter.

Formula
Dollars = Nickels × $0.05 • 1 nickel = 5 cents = $0.05 USD
How this is calculated

A US nickel is a five-cent coin, so its value is exactly $0.05. Multiplying the count of nickels by 0.05 gives the total dollar value. The result is then split into whole dollars (the integer part) and remaining cents (the fractional part × 100), which is what you would hand to a cashier.

The calculator also shows cross-coin equivalents: one dime is worth two nickels, one quarter is worth five nickels, one half-dollar is worth ten nickels, and five nickels equal one cent × 25 (i.e., 25 pennies = 5 nickels). These are the exact integer multiples within the US coinage system and do not depend on any rounding.

This is a US-specific calculation. The nickel has been a five-cent coin since 1866. Other countries have coins of similar size and colloquial names but different face values; this calculator applies only to the United States five-cent piece.

Frequently asked questions

Exactly 20 nickels make one dollar (20 × $0.05 = $1.00). This is the most common question, and the default value in the calculator shows this: 20 nickels = $1.00.

A quarter is worth $0.25, and a nickel is worth $0.05, so it takes exactly 5 nickels to equal one quarter ($0.05 × 5 = $0.25).

$10.00 ÷ $0.05 = 200 nickels. For any dollar amount, divide by 0.05 (or multiply by 20) to find the number of nickels.
