How does this calculator work?
Mowing cost = (Area ÷ Speed) × (Labour rate + Fuel rate) per session; multiply by sessions per year for the annual total. Enter area in m², sq ft or acres, your mowing speed, rates and session count to break down the cost into labour vs fuel and get the full annual picture.
Formula
How this is calculated
Mowing cost is driven by three factors: the area to be cut, the mowing productivity (square metres per hour), and the combined hourly cost of labour and fuel or electricity. This calculator multiplies these to give the time per session and the cost per session, then multiplies by the number of sessions per year for the annual figure.
Mowing speed varies widely: a standard push mower covers roughly 150–300 m²/hour, a self-propelled mower 300–600 m²/hour, and a ride-on or zero-turn mower 1,000–3,000 m²/hour. Fuel cost depends on engine size and fuel type — petrol mowers typically consume 0.3–0.8 L/hour; electric mowers cost a few pence or cents per hour in electricity. The labour rate is either your own opportunity cost or the contractor's hourly charge.
This calculator uses a simple area ÷ speed model for time, which assumes constant mowing speed over a flat, rectangular lawn with no obstacles. Real mowing times are typically 20–40% longer due to turning, trimming edges and navigating obstacles. All monetary values use whichever currency you enter — the calculator is currency-agnostic.
Frequently asked questions
In temperate climates (UK, northern Europe, Pacific Northwest) mowing typically runs from April to October, averaging 20–25 sessions. In warmer climates (southern US, Mediterranean) grass grows almost year-round and 30–45 sessions are common. Mowing frequency should keep the lawn at a consistent height — removing no more than one-third of the blade length per session.
A standard push mower covers 150–300 m²/hour (1,600–3,200 sq ft/h). A self-propelled mower achieves 300–600 m²/h. Ride-on tractors range from 1,000–3,000 m²/h (¼–¾ acre/h). These figures assume open, flat lawn — obstacles, slopes and starting/stopping reduce effective speed by 20–40%.
Contractors typically charge $30–$80 per session for a standard suburban lawn (in 2025 terms, in the US), covering labour, equipment and fuel. Doing it yourself saves the labour charge but costs your time and equipment maintenance. Compare the annual figures using realistic rates for your local market.
