How does this calculator work?
Dollar value = miles × cents-per-mile ÷ 100. Select your loyalty program (Delta, United, Chase UR, etc.) and enter your balance to see the estimated cash value at 2025 benchmark rates, the 1¢/mile cash-back floor, and a premium redemption ceiling — rates are editable estimates.
Formula
How this is calculated
The monetary value of a frequent flyer mile or loyalty point depends on how you redeem it. Each program has a benchmark cents-per-mile (CPM) rate: Delta SkyMiles average ~1.2¢, United MileagePlus ~1.3¢, and flexible currencies like Chase Ultimate Rewards or Amex Membership Rewards often reach 2¢ when transferred to airline partners. Multiplying your balance by the CPM and dividing by 100 converts to dollars.
The cash-back baseline (1¢ per mile) is the typical floor for statement-credit or gift-card redemptions — rarely worth less. The premium redemption ceiling assumes ~1.6× the standard rate, reflecting business or first-class awards on partner carriers where the sweet spot can reach 3–5¢ per mile for the right routing. All rates are 2025 community estimates and change as programs adjust their award charts.
This calculator is most useful for deciding whether to use miles or pay cash for a ticket: if a fare costs $400 and you would burn 40,000 miles, you are getting 1¢/mile — which may or may not beat your program's benchmark. Adjust the custom rate to evaluate a specific redemption you have in mind.
Frequently asked questions
Travel experts generally consider 1.5¢ or more a good economy redemption and 3¢+ a great premium cabin redemption. Cash-back and gift-card conversions usually return ~1¢ — the floor. The "best" value depends on your program and which specific award you book.
No. Airline miles (Delta, United, etc.) are tied to one carrier and its alliance partners. Bank points (Chase UR, Amex MR, Citi TY) are flexible currencies that transfer to multiple airlines and hotels, often making them more valuable. Hotel points (Marriott, Hilton) have their own separate valuations.
Most programs expire miles after 18–24 months of account inactivity. One small earning or redemption transaction typically resets the clock. This calculator does not model expiry — check your program's specific terms.
