How does this calculator work?
Divide the recipe wattage by your microwave's wattage to get a power ratio, then multiply the recipe time by that ratio. A 2-minute recipe at 1100 W needs 2 × (1100 ÷ 700) ≈ 3.1 min in a 700 W microwave. Lower wattage always means longer cooking time in direct proportion.

How this is calculated
Microwaves heat food by delivering electromagnetic energy at a rate equal to their output power in watts. Total energy delivered equals power multiplied by time, so if your microwave runs at a lower wattage than the recipe assumes, it needs proportionally longer to deliver the same total energy. The formula is simply T₂ = T₁ × (W₁ ÷ W₂), where W₁ is the recipe wattage and W₂ is your microwave's output wattage.
To find your output wattage, open the microwave door and look for a label on the interior side wall or door frame — it usually says something like "Output: 700 W". Note that the wattage printed on the back of the unit is the input (wall-socket) power, which is higher than the cooking output. Common countertop microwaves range from about 600 W (compact models) to 1800 W (large countertop units); most mid-range models are 700–1100 W.
This formula is a proportional approximation. Real cooking outcomes depend on food density, water content, starting temperature, and how evenly your microwave distributes its energy field. Treat the result as a starting guide: check for doneness before fully relying on the adjusted time, and stir or rotate dense items partway through as you normally would.

You can also check the model's manual or search the model number online. Output power (the actual cooking power) is typically 60–70 % of the input power shown on the back plug label.
Microwave cooking is about total energy delivered (power × time). A lower-wattage microwave delivers less energy per second, so it needs more seconds to put in the same total energy a recipe requires. For example, halving the wattage exactly doubles the time needed.
Most packaged foods and cookbook microwave recipes are written for 1000–1100 W, since that was the dominant countertop wattage for many years. Some older recipes assume 800 W. Newer premium appliances may run at 1200–1800 W, which means shorter times than the packaging states.
