mg to Teaspoon Converter — Milligrams to Teaspoons

Convert a mass in milligrams to teaspoons for any substance. Because a teaspoon measures volume, the result depends on the density of the ingredient — 5000 mg of water and 5000 mg of honey occupy very different volumes.

Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Teaspoons = mg ÷ (density × 1000 × mL/tsp). A US teaspoon holds ~4929 mg of water, ~4164 mg of granulated sugar, ~6000 mg of fine salt, or ~2564 mg of cocoa powder. Select a substance or enter a custom density to convert any mass in milligrams to teaspoons and millilitres.

Formula
teaspoons = mg ÷ (density_g/mL × 1000 × mL/tsp)
How this is calculated

Milligrams measure mass; teaspoons measure volume. Converting between them requires the density of the substance (how much a given volume weighs). The relationship is: teaspoons = mg ÷ (density × 1000 × mL per teaspoon), where density is in g/mL, 1000 converts grams to milligrams, and mL per teaspoon is 4.929 for a US teaspoon or 5.000 for a metric teaspoon.

For water at exactly 1 g/mL, one US teaspoon holds about 4929 mg. Fine table salt is much denser (≈ 1.22 g/mL), so a teaspoon holds about 6000 mg. Airy cocoa powder (≈ 0.52 g/mL) fits only about 2564 mg per teaspoon — a more than twofold difference for the same teaspoon size.

The densities listed are approximate bulk densities (loosely spooned, not packed). Packing or sifting an ingredient can change the effective density by 10–30%. Use the custom-density option for any substance not in the list — look up its density in g/mL (the same number as g/cm³). For medication dosing, always follow the prescription label and use the calibrated oral syringe or dropper provided by the pharmacy; household teaspoons vary from 3 to 7 mL and are not reliable for medicines.

Frequently asked questions

Approximately 4929 mg in a US teaspoon of water (4.929 mL × 1 g/mL × 1000 mg/g) or exactly 5000 mg in a metric teaspoon (5 mL × 1). For other substances the figure changes proportionally to the density — multiply 4929 (or 5000) by the density in g/mL.

Granulated sugar has a bulk density of about 0.845 g/mL, so one US teaspoon holds approximately 4164 mg (0.845 × 4929). A metric teaspoon holds about 4225 mg. Packed brown sugar is denser and can hold 10–20% more.

This calculator is designed for cooking and general unit conversions, not medication dosing. For any prescribed medicine, follow your pharmacist's label and use only the measuring device that came with the medication — household teaspoons are not calibrated and can differ by over 30% from a true teaspoon volume.
