Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Pick the measurement type, select the metric unit, enter a value, and get all US standard equivalents instantly. Key factors: 1 km = 0.62137 mi; 1 kg = 2.20462 lb; 1 L = 0.26417 US gal; °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32; 1 km/h = 0.62137 mph. All factors are exact by international definition.

Formula
Length: miles = m ÷ 1,609.344 • Weight: lb = g ÷ 453.592 • Volume: gal = mL ÷ 3,785.41 • Temperature: °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32 • Speed: mph = m/s ÷ 0.44704
How this is calculated

The metric (SI) system and the US customary system define units of different sizes. Converting between them requires multiplying or dividing by a fixed factor derived from the official legal definitions of each unit. For example, one international mile is defined as exactly 1,609.344 metres, one avoirdupois pound as exactly 453.59237 grams, and one US liquid gallon as exactly 3,785.41 mL. These exact definitions make the conversion factors constant and not subject to measurement uncertainty.

Temperature is the exception — it requires an additive offset as well as a scale factor. Celsius and Fahrenheit share the same size degree (approximately — 1 °C step = 1.8 °F step) but have different zero points: 0 °C = 32 °F (the freezing point of water). The formula °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32 handles both the scaling and the offset. Kelvin and Rankine are absolute scales (no negative values) with no offset between them, just the 9/5 size difference.

Speed conversions flow through m/s as the SI base unit: km/h → m/s divides by 3.6; m/s → mph divides by 0.44704 (exact). Volume conversions use the US liquid gallon (3,785.41 mL), which differs from the imperial gallon (4,546.09 mL). This tool uses US customary units throughout.

Frequently asked questions

This converter uses the US liquid gallon (3,785.41 mL). The imperial gallon used in the UK and some Commonwealth countries is larger at 4,546.09 mL. If you need the imperial gallon, divide litres by 4.54609 instead.

Because they are the same ratio — a mile is defined as exactly 1,609.344 metres, so whether you are comparing distances or speeds (distance ÷ time), the conversion factor is the same 1.60934. The time unit (hour) cancels out.

A metric tonne (1,000 kg) equals about 1.10231 short tons (the US/American ton of 2,000 lb) or 0.984207 long tons (the UK/imperial ton of 2,240 lb). Enter kilograms in the weight category and divide the lb result by 2,000 for short tons.
