How does this calculator work?
Total cost = sloped area × (material + labour per sq ft). Sloped area = footprint × pitch factor (1.02 flat → 1.41 at 12:12 pitch). Add 8–15% waste to materials. Typical US 2024 all-in cost: $8–16/sq ft footprint for standing seam steel. Replace defaults with local contractor quotes for accurate budgeting.

How this is calculated
A metal roof is costed in two stages. First, the horizontal footprint is multiplied by a pitch factor to get the actual sloped surface area — a 6:12 pitch has a factor of 1.12, meaning the sloped area is 12% larger than the floor plan. This factor is derived from the Pythagorean relationship: factor = √(1 + (rise/12)²). A waste allowance (typically 8–15%) is added only to the material quantity, to account for off-cuts, ridge pieces, valleys, and overlaps; labour is applied to the true sloped area.
Material and labour costs are entered in dollars per square foot of sloped area. Typical US 2024 installed material costs (supply only, not including underlayment or tear-off) range from about $2–3/sq ft for corrugated ribbed steel, to $4–7/sq ft for standing seam steel, and $14–22/sq ft for copper. Labour adds another $2–5/sq ft depending on pitch complexity, local rates, and site conditions. Contractors often quote in roofing squares — one square equals 100 sq ft.
All defaults are mid-range US 2024 estimates and vary substantially by region, contractor, material grade, and project complexity. Ridge caps, flashings, underlayment, and removal of the old roof are usually quoted separately. Obtain at least three contractor quotes before finalising a budget.
