Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Market Cap = Share Price × Shares Outstanding. Add debt and subtract cash to get Enterprise Value. Divide share price by EPS for the P/E ratio. These three metrics together give a quick picture of a public company's size, capital structure and relative valuation.

Formula
Market Cap = Share Price × Shares Outstanding • Enterprise Value = Market Cap + Total Debt − Cash • P/E = Price ÷ EPS
How this is calculated

Market capitalization is the simplest measure of a company's size in the eyes of public markets: multiply the current share price by the total number of shares outstanding. If a company has 1 million shares trading at $150 each, its market cap is $150 million. This number changes every time the share price moves.

Enterprise value (EV) adjusts market cap to reflect the company's full capital structure. It adds total debt (because an acquirer would assume it) and subtracts cash and equivalents (which could be used to pay down debt immediately). EV is a more complete picture of what it would truly cost to purchase the business and is the denominator used in ratios like EV/EBITDA.

The price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio divides the share price by annual earnings per share and tells you how many years of current earnings investors are paying. A P/E of 15 means the market is paying $15 for every $1 of annual profit. Debt and EPS values are editable estimates — use figures from the company's latest balance sheet and income statement for accuracy.

Frequently asked questions

Market capitalization (market cap) is the total dollar value of a company's outstanding shares: Share Price × Shares Outstanding. It is the most widely used measure of a public company's size and is used to classify companies as small-cap, mid-cap or large-cap.

Enterprise value adds total debt and subtracts cash from market cap to reflect what it would cost to acquire the entire business. A company with $100 M market cap, $30 M debt and $10 M cash has an enterprise value of $120 M — what you'd effectively pay including the debt you'd inherit and the cash you'd gain.

A "good" P/E varies by industry, growth stage and interest-rate environment. Historically the S&P 500 has averaged around 15–25. High-growth tech companies often trade at 30–100+ P/E, while mature utilities or financials may trade at 10–15. Always compare within the same sector and period.
