ALC (cells/µL) = WBC (×10³/µL) × lymphocyte% × 10. Normal adult range is 1,000–4,800 cells/µL. Below 1,000 is lymphopenia (too few); above 4,800 is lymphocytosis (too many). Enter your CBC differential values to get the absolute count and classification.

How this is calculated
The absolute lymphocyte count (ALC) measures the total number of lymphocytes — the white blood cells that drive adaptive immunity — circulating per microlitre of blood. It is derived from two values in a complete blood count (CBC) with differential: the total white blood cell count (WBC, typically reported in thousands per microlitre) and the percentage of WBCs that are lymphocytes.
The formula is: ALC = WBC × lymphocyte% × 10. The multiplication by 10 converts the WBC from ×10³/µL to cells/µL and applies the percentage in one step. For example, a WBC of 6.0 ×10³/µL with 30% lymphocytes gives ALC = 6.0 × 30 × 10 = 1,800 cells/µL, which is within the normal adult range of 1,000–4,800 cells/µL.
Low ALC (below 1,000 cells/µL) is called lymphopenia and may indicate HIV/AIDS, steroid use, chemotherapy, autoimmune disease, or severe malnutrition. High ALC (above 4,800 cells/µL) is called lymphocytosis and is associated with viral infections (e.g. Epstein-Barr virus), chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, or other lymphoproliferative conditions. Normal reference ranges vary slightly by laboratory and age group — these thresholds are standard adult values. Always interpret results alongside clinical findings and consult a healthcare provider.
