How does this calculator work?
Weight (lbs) = (T_in/12) × (W_in/12) × L_ft × density (lbs/ft³) × quantity. Density values from USDA Wood Handbook at 12% moisture content: Southern Yellow Pine 34, Douglas Fir 32, Red Oak 44, Western Red Cedar 23, Hard Maple 44. Always use actual milled dimensions, not nominal lumber size.

How this is calculated
Lumber weight is determined by its volume and the density of the wood species. Volume in cubic feet is computed from the actual (not nominal) dimensions: (thickness_in / 12) × (width_in / 12) × length_ft. Multiplying by the species density in lbs/ft³ gives the weight of one board; multiplying again by the quantity gives the total load.
Density values in this calculator are for air-dried lumber at approximately 12% moisture content, taken from the USDA Forest Products Laboratory Wood Handbook (2021 edition). Actual weights vary with moisture content — green (freshly cut) lumber can weigh 50–100% more than air-dried because it is saturated with water. Kiln-dried lumber is close to the values shown but may be slightly lighter. Engineered products (LVL, glulam, OSB) have different densities and are not covered here.
Always use the actual milled dimensions, not the nominal lumber size. A "2×4" has actual dimensions of 1.5 × 3.5 inches; using 2 × 4 would overestimate the weight by about 52%. Actual dimensions are typically printed on the board or stamped on the end grain.
Frequently asked questions
Nominal lumber sizes (2×4, 2×6, etc.) are historical designations from when lumber was rough-cut to those sizes before kiln-drying and planing. After milling, a nominal 2×4 measures approximately 1.5 × 3.5 inches. Using the nominal size would significantly overestimate both volume and weight. Always measure or look up the actual size.
Significantly. Green lumber (freshly cut, ~100% moisture content) can weigh 1.5–2× the air-dried values shown here. Kiln-dried lumber (typically 10–19% MC) is very close to the 12% MC values in this calculator. If you are weighing green logs or wet lumber, the actual weight can be substantially higher — check the moisture content with a meter for precision.
Plywood, OSB, LVL, and glulam have their own density specifications, usually listed on the product data sheet. As a rough guide, structural plywood is approximately 35–40 lbs/ft³, OSB 38–42 lbs/ft³, and glulam 33–36 lbs/ft³. Enter these as custom densities by finding the closest value in the species selector — or use the density directly with volume = thickness × width × length.
