Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Flow rate (L/min) = Volume (L) ÷ Time (min). Enter any two of flow rate, volume, and time to solve for the third. The result is also converted to L/s, m³/h, and US GPM. Assumes steady, uniform flow.

Formula
Flow rate (L/min) = Volume (L) ÷ Time (min)
How this is calculated

Volumetric flow rate is the volume of fluid that passes a point per unit of time. The litre per minute (L/min) is the standard unit for everyday fluid flows — garden hoses, shower heads, fuel pumps, and medical oxygen supplies are all commonly rated in L/min.

The formula is simply Q = V / t, where Q is the flow rate, V is the total volume, and t is the elapsed time. Rearranging gives V = Q × t (volume delivered in a given time) and t = V / Q (time to fill a given volume). All three forms are available in the "Solve for" selector.

The calculator also converts the result to litres per second (÷ 60), cubic metres per hour (× 60 ÷ 1000), and US gallons per minute (× 0.26417) so you can match whatever units a specification calls for. This formula assumes steady, uniform flow; in practice, pressure fluctuations and pipe losses can cause the actual flow rate to vary.

Frequently asked questions

Multiply L/min by 0.26417 to get US gallons per minute (GPM). Conversely, multiply GPM by 3.78541 to get L/min.

A standard garden hose delivers roughly 15–30 L/min (4–8 GPM) at normal household water pressure (2.5–4 bar). The actual rate depends on hose diameter, length, and the nozzle fitting used.

Multiply L/min by 0.06 (i.e. × 60 ÷ 1000) to get cubic metres per hour. For example, 20 L/min = 1.2 m³/h.
