Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Enter a comma-separated list of numbers and this calculator sorts them from least to greatest (ascending order), then computes the min, max, range, median, and mean. Useful for quickly ordering raw data before further statistical analysis.

Formula
Ascending sort: a₁ ≤ a₂ ≤ … ≤ aₙ • Range = max − min • Median = middle value
How this is calculated

Sorting numbers from least to greatest means arranging them in ascending order so each number is no greater than the next. The algorithm compares every pair of values and places the smallest first, continuing until the entire list is ordered. For example, {5, 3, 8, 1} becomes {1, 3, 5, 8}.

Once sorted, the minimum is the first value, the maximum is the last, and the range is the difference between them. The median is the middle value for an odd-length list, or the average of the two middle values for an even-length list. The mean is the sum of all values divided by the count.

Sorting is a foundational step in statistics, data analysis, and computer science. Identifying the order of values makes it easy to spot outliers, find percentiles, and understand the spread of a dataset at a glance.

Frequently asked questions

Negative numbers sort before zero and positive numbers. For example, {−3, 5, −1, 2} sorted least to greatest is {−3, −1, 2, 5}. This calculator handles negatives automatically — just include them in your list.

The median is the middle value after sorting and is resistant to extreme outliers. The mean (average) sums all values and divides by the count — it can be pulled significantly by one very large or very small number. For skewed data the median is often more representative.

Yes — the calculator handles whole numbers, negative numbers, and decimals in the same list. For a tool focused specifically on ordering decimal numbers, see the Least to Greatest Decimals Calculator.
