How this is calculated

Lead time is the total elapsed time from placing an order to having the goods available for use. It is made up of four standard stages: order processing (the time a supplier takes to confirm and start the order); manufacturing or production (the time to make or assemble the item — zero if it is stocked); transit (the time goods spend in transport); and receiving or handling (inspection, put-away and confirmation on arrival).

The calculator simply sums all four stage durations. Each stage can be set to zero if it does not apply — for example, manufacturing is zero for off-the-shelf products, and receiving can be zero for digital goods. The working-days figure is an estimate based on a standard 5-day week and is shown for rough scheduling purposes only.

All figures assume calendar days (not business days) unless you mentally adjust. For planning safety stock or reorder points, it is common to add a buffer of 10–20 % on top of the calculated total lead time to account for variability in each stage.
