Grams to Teaspoons Calculator

Convert grams (mass) to US teaspoons (volume) for any cooking ingredient — especially useful for small amounts like salt, baking soda, and spices. Density is applied automatically from a built-in list.

Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

tsp = grams ÷ density (g/mL) ÷ 4.929. One US teaspoon = ⅓ tablespoon ≈ 4.93 mL. 5 g of salt ≈ 0.83 tsp; 5 g of baking soda ≈ 1.47 tsp; 5 g of honey ≈ 0.71 tsp. Select an ingredient for automatic density or enter a custom value for unlisted ingredients.

Formula
tsp = grams ÷ density (g/mL) ÷ 4.929
How this is calculated

Grams measure mass and teaspoons measure volume, so the ingredient's density is required to switch between them. Divide the gram amount by the ingredient's density in g/mL to get milliliters, then divide by 4.92892 (the volume of one US teaspoon) to get teaspoons.

This conversion is especially important for small-measure ingredients like salt and baking soda, where densities differ significantly: table salt is about 1.217 g/mL, baking soda is about 0.69 g/mL, and ground cinnamon is about 0.56 g/mL. Getting these right matters most when scaling recipes or measuring by weight instead of volume.

One US teaspoon equals one-third of a tablespoon, about 4.929 mL. All outputs use US customary units. For UK or metric recipes, note that a metric teaspoon is 5 mL — very close but not identical. The "Custom ingredient" option accepts any density in g/mL, which you can look up from nutritional databases or measure by weighing a known volume.

Frequently asked questions

Table salt has a density of about 1.217 g/mL, so 1 g of salt ≈ 0.82 mL ÷ 4.929 mL/tsp ≈ 0.17 teaspoons. Roughly one-sixth of a teaspoon.

Baking soda has a bulk density of about 0.69 g/mL, so 1 g ≈ 1.45 mL ÷ 4.929 ≈ 0.29 teaspoons — a little under one-third of a teaspoon.

Sifting aerates flour and reduces its bulk density from roughly 0.59 g/mL to closer to 0.45 g/mL. The same gram weight takes up more volume after sifting. For precise baking, always sift (or not sift) consistently and use the density that matches your technique.
