How does this calculator work?
Enter percentage marks and credit hours for each course. The calculator converts marks to HEC Pakistan grade points (≥85% = 4.00 down to <45% = 0.00) and computes CGPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ(credits) on a 4.0 scale. Scale is the 2020 HEC recommended standard; individual universities may differ.
Formula
How this is calculated
Pakistani universities mostly follow the Higher Education Commission (HEC) recommended grading scale, which maps percentage marks to grade points on a 4.0 scale. The bands used here are: ≥85% = A (4.00), 80–84% = A− (3.70), 75–79% = B+ (3.30), 70–74% = B (3.00), 65–69% = B− (2.70), 60–64% = C+ (2.30), 55–59% = C (2.00), 50–54% = C− (1.70), 45–49% = D (1.00), and below 45% = F (0.00). These reflect the 2020 HEC policy framework, though individual universities — particularly FAST, LUMS, NUST, UET and others — may use slightly different breakpoints.
The calculator finds the grade points for each course by looking up its percentage marks in the scale, then multiplies those points by the course's credit hours to get quality points. The CGPA is the sum of all quality points divided by the sum of all credit hours. Courses with more credit hours (e.g., a 4-credit lab or core course) pull the CGPA more strongly than 1-credit electives.
Courses with marks below 0 or above 100, or with zero or negative credit hours, are skipped. Pass/fail courses without percentage marks should be omitted, as they do not contribute to the GPA. To use this for a specific semester, enter only that semester's courses; to calculate cumulative GPA, enter all courses across all semesters.
Frequently asked questions
No. The HEC recommends a standard scale, but universities such as LUMS, FAST (NUCES), NUST, Aga Khan University, and many others have their own variations — including different grade-point thresholds and whether they award A+ above 4.0. Always verify your institution's official grading policy in its academic regulations.
Most Pakistani universities require a minimum CGPA of 2.0 (sometimes 2.5) for graduation. Scholarships such as HEC Need-Based or Merit Scholarships typically require 3.0–3.5 CGPA. Some competitive scholarships set the bar at 3.5 or above. Check the specific requirement of the programme or scholarship you are applying to.
There is no universally agreed conversion; different universities use different formulas. A rough approximation used by some institutions is: percentage ≈ CGPA × 25. For example, 3.5 CGPA ≈ 87.5%. However, many graduate schools and employers ask for the official transcript rather than a converted percentage, so always use the official method from your university.
