How this is calculated

Glass weight is volume multiplied by density. Volume = length × width × thickness; because thickness is almost always specified in millimetres while length and width are in metres, the calculator divides thickness by 1 000 before multiplying. The resulting cubic metres are then multiplied by the density of the chosen glass type to get kilograms.

Densities differ by glass composition. Standard soda-lime glass — used for nearly all windows, mirrors and tableware — has a density of about 2 500 kg/m³, so a 1 m × 1 m pane at 6 mm thick weighs exactly 15 kg. Tempering is a heat-treatment process that changes the internal stress profile without affecting composition or density, so tempered glass of the same size weighs the same as untempered. Borosilicate glass (Pyrex) is slightly lighter at 2 230 kg/m³, fused silica even more so at 2 200 kg/m³, while lead crystal at 3 100 kg/m³ is noticeably heavier per unit volume.

The kg/m² figure (density × thickness in metres) is a practical shortcut for site use: once you know it, you can scale to any area without repeating the thickness conversion. These are nominal reference densities; real batch compositions and surface coatings may vary by ±2%.

No. Tempering changes the stress profile of the glass (making it stronger and causing it to shatter into small pieces rather than sharp shards) but does not change its density or composition. A tempered pane of the same size and thickness weighs the same as an annealed one.

Multiply kilograms by 2.205. For example, a 20 kg pane weighs 20 × 2.205 = 44.1 lb. The calculator shows both units automatically.
