GDP Per Capita Calculator — Average Output per Person

Compute GDP per capita — the average economic output per person — by dividing total GDP by the population. Optionally enter a second period to calculate the growth rate in GDP per capita.
Nominal or real GDP — use real GDP for meaningful cross-year comparisons

Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

GDP per Capita = GDP ÷ Population — the average economic output per person. It is widely used to compare living standards across countries and time periods. For cross-country comparisons use PPP-adjusted GDP; for time-series comparisons use real (inflation-adjusted) GDP. High GDP per capita does not imply low inequality.

Formula
GDP per Capita = GDP ÷ Population
How this is calculated

GDP per capita is the simplest and most widely cited measure for comparing economic output across countries and time periods at a per-person level. It divides total GDP by the total population: a country with GDP of $25 trillion and 330 million people has a GDP per capita of roughly $75,758. The figure is typically reported in current US dollars for international comparisons or in constant (inflation-adjusted) local currency for time-series comparisons.

For cross-country comparisons, GDP per capita is often expressed in purchasing-power parity (PPP) terms — adjusting for differences in price levels between countries — so that $1 buys a comparable basket of goods everywhere. This calculator does not apply PPP adjustments; to use PPP-adjusted values, substitute PPP-adjusted GDP in the first field. Official PPP data is published annually by the World Bank and IMF.

GDP per capita is a measure of average output, not of income distribution. A country can have a high GDP per capita alongside high inequality, meaning most people earn far less than the average. It also does not capture non-market activity (household work, volunteer labour) or well-being dimensions such as health or environment. Complementary measures like the Human Development Index (HDI) or median household income give a fuller picture.

Frequently asked questions

They are related but not identical. GDP per capita approximates the average income generated per person in an economy, but GDP includes corporate profits, depreciation, and government output — much of which never reaches households as personal income. Average household or personal income is typically somewhat lower than GDP per capita.

The units just need to be consistent so that the ratio makes sense. Common combinations: GDP in billions of USD and population in millions (gives per capita in thousands of USD); GDP in full dollars and population in people (gives per capita in dollars directly). Avoid mixing scales — e.g., GDP in trillions with population in individuals would give a very small number.

Use nominal GDP per capita when comparing a snapshot at current prices or converting to a common currency. Use real GDP per capita when comparing across time periods — real values remove inflation so that growth reflects actual output increases, not just price rises. For cross-country comparisons, use PPP-adjusted GDP to neutralise price-level differences.
