Game Score Calculator — Points to Percentage & Letter Grade
Convert raw scores to a percentage and letter grade. Supports penalty deductions (wrong answers, fouls) and bonus points (streaks, extra-credit) to give a net adjusted score.

How does this calculator work?
Net score = raw points − penalties + bonuses. Percentage = net / max × 100. US letter grades: A ≥ 90%, B ≥ 80%, C ≥ 70%, D ≥ 60%, F < 60%. The calculator also shows points still needed to reach A (90%) and how far above the passing mark (60%) the score sits.
Formula
How this is calculated
Many scoring systems adjust raw points with penalty deductions — for wrong answers, time overruns or fouls — and bonus additions for streaks, speed, or extra-credit performance. This calculator sums all adjustments: Net score = raw score − penalties + bonuses, then expresses the result as a percentage of the maximum possible score.
The US letter-grade scale is applied to the clamped percentage (0–100%): A ≥ 90%, B ≥ 80%, C ≥ 70%, D ≥ 60%, and F below 60%. These are the most common academic and competitive cut-offs, though specific institutions may use different thresholds (some use 93% for A, for example). The calculator additionally shows how many more points would be needed to reach the A threshold (90% of maximum), and how many points the score sits above the passing mark (60% of maximum).
If bonuses push the net score above 100%, the displayed percentage can exceed 100% (a valid result in many competitive contexts). The grade bands clamp at 100% for classification purposes, so a 110% score still shows "A."
Frequently asked questions
The standard US scale is used: A = 90–100%, B = 80–89%, C = 70–79%, D = 60–69%, F = below 60%. These are common academic cut-offs — many schools use different thresholds (e.g., A ≥ 93% or A ≥ 94%). Adjust the maximum score field to match your grading system if needed.
The percentage can exceed 100% when bonuses push the net score above the maximum — this is valid for games with bonus stages or extra-credit questions. The grade bands treat anything ≥ 90% as an A, so a 110% score still earns the "A" classification.
Yes — enter total points scored as your "score," the maximum achievable or target score as "max," and any points deducted (fouls, yellow cards, time penalties) as "penalties." The percentage shows how close to the maximum you came, regardless of the domain.
