Gallons Per Square Foot Calculator — Coverage Rate

Enter the total volume of liquid (in US gallons) and the area dimensions (in feet) to find the coverage rate in gallons per square foot — useful for irrigation, rainfall measurement, fertiliser dilution and any liquid applied to a known surface.

Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Gallons per square foot = Total gallons ÷ Area in sq ft. One inch of rain ≈ 0.6234 gal/ft²; divide your result by 0.6234 to convert to rainfall-depth inches. Multiply by 40.746 to get litres per square metre (= mm of depth). Typical lawn irrigation targets 0.3–0.6 gal/ft² per week.

Formula
Gallons/ft² = Total gallons ÷ Area (ft²) • Rainfall depth (in) = (gal/ft²) ÷ 0.6234 • 1 inch rain on 1 ft² ≈ 0.6234 US gal
How this is calculated

Gallons per square foot is a coverage rate — it answers "how deep would this liquid be if it formed a uniform layer?" One inch of rainfall on one square foot equals (1/12) cubic foot of water, and since one US gallon equals approximately 0.1337 cubic feet, that works out to about 0.6234 US gallons per square foot per inch of rain. Dividing the coverage rate by 0.6234 gives the equivalent rainfall depth in inches, which is useful for irrigation scheduling.

For lawn and garden irrigation, typical application rates are 0.5–1 inch of water per week (roughly 0.31–0.62 gal/ft²). Agricultural drip systems may apply far less — sometimes under 0.05 gal/ft² per day — while flood irrigation can temporarily apply several gallons per square foot. Knowing the coverage rate lets you compare your irrigation against reference evapotranspiration (ET) data from local agricultural extension services.

To convert the result to litres per square metre (the metric equivalent), the calculator multiplies by 3.7854 (litres per US gallon) and by 10.7639 (square feet per square metre). One litre per square metre equals one millimetre of depth, so the L/m² figure doubles as rainfall depth in millimetres.

Frequently asked questions

1 inch of rain on 1 square foot equals (1/12) cubic foot = 0.6234 US gallons. So a rainfall of 1 inch on a 1,000 ft² lawn delivers about 623 US gallons of water.

Divide the total gallons your sprinkler system delivers per hour by the area it covers to get gal/ft²/hr. Compare that to your weekly water target (e.g., 0.5 gal/ft² = about 0.8 inches of irrigation). Adjust run time until the weekly total matches local ET recommendations.

Yes — enter the total gallons of diluted fertilizer solution you applied and the treated area. The result in gal/ft² tells you the application rate, which you can compare to product label instructions (often given in gallons per 1,000 sq ft).
