Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Fence total = posts × post cost + bays × panel cost + rails × rail cost + posts × concrete cost + labor rate × length, all multiplied by (1 + contingency%). Posts = length ÷ spacing + 1; rails = bays × 2 or 3 by fence height. Enter your unit prices and a 10–15% contingency to get a project budget.

Formula
Total = (posts × postCost + bays × panelCost + rails × railCost + posts × concreteCost + laborRate × length) × (1 + contingency/100)
How this is calculated

The calculator derives material quantities from the fence geometry: the number of posts equals bays (length ÷ spacing, rounded up) plus one end post; rails equal bays times 2 or 3 depending on fence height (≤ 1.2 m uses 2, taller fences use 3 for rigidity). Each quantity is multiplied by its unit cost and totalled into a material subtotal.

Labor is priced per linear meter of finished fence — a typical range in 2025 is roughly 20–60 currency units per meter, depending on location, material and terrain. Enter 0 to estimate a DIY build. A contingency percentage (10–15% is conventional) is applied to the entire base cost (materials + labor) to cover cutting waste, unexpected site conditions, hardware, and small finishing items that are hard to price upfront.

All default unit costs are editable estimates intended as starting figures for a budget pass — confirm pricing with your local supplier before committing. The model assumes a single straight run without gates or corners; budget those separately.

Frequently asked questions

Cutting waste on rails and pickets (5–10%), unexpected deeper post holes from rocky or wet ground, hardware such as screws and post caps, and small rework. 10% is conservative for a simple straight fence; 15–20% makes sense for complex terrain or first-time DIY.

No. Subtract the gate opening width from the total fence length when entering the length, and add gate hardware and posts as a separate line item in your budget.

The defaults are rough 2025 estimates for a mid-range market. Timber panel prices vary by species, finish and region; labor rates span a wide range. Update each field with your actual quotes for a meaningful estimate.
