How this is calculated

Exclusive pumping (EP) means providing breast milk entirely by expressing with a pump rather than nursing directly. The key planning goal is to pump often enough to maintain supply and to produce at least as much as the baby consumes each day. This calculator computes three things: your actual daily output (sessions × oz per session); your baby's estimated daily need; and the time gap between sessions.

The estimated daily need uses the widely cited guideline of approximately 2–2.5 oz per pound of body weight per day for babies under six months, equivalent to about 150–200 mL per kg per day (La Leche League, Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine). The default uses 2.5 oz/lb as an upper estimate; actual intake varies by age, growth phase and individual baby. After solid foods are introduced around six months, total milk intake typically begins to decrease.

The number of sessions per day matters for milk supply, not just output. Most lactation consultants recommend at least 7–8 sessions per 24 hours in the early weeks (roughly every 2–3 hours), with the frequency stepping down only as supply is well established. The session-timing figure (hours between sessions) helps you plan a sustainable schedule, including nighttime pumps. Any surplus beyond daily need can be frozen for future use.
