How does this calculator work?
AEC (×10⁹/L) = WBC (×10⁹/L) × eosinophil% ÷ 100. Normal adult range: 0.1–0.5 ×10⁹/L. Mild eosinophilia: 0.5–1.5; moderate: 1.5–5.0; severe (hypereosinophilia): > 5.0 ×10⁹/L. Enter the CBC total WBC and the eosinophil differential percentage to get both ×10⁹/L and cells/µL.

How this is calculated
A routine complete blood count (CBC) reports the total white blood cell count and a differential — the percentage breakdown of each WBC type. Laboratories do not always pre-calculate the absolute count for each cell type, so the absolute eosinophil count (AEC) must be derived by multiplying the total WBC by the eosinophil fraction. To convert to cells per microlitre (cells/µL), multiply by 1,000, because 1 ×10⁹/L = 1,000 cells/µL.
Normal AEC in adults is 0.1–0.5 ×10⁹/L (100–500 cells/µL). Mild eosinophilia is defined as 0.5–1.5 ×10⁹/L, moderate as 1.5–5.0 ×10⁹/L, and severe (hypereosinophilia) as > 5.0 ×10⁹/L. Eosinopenia (AEC < 0.1 ×10⁹/L) can occur in acute infections or following corticosteroid therapy.
Common causes of eosinophilia include parasitic infections, allergic and atopic conditions (asthma, eczema), drug reactions, and, at higher counts, haematological disorders such as hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES). HES is typically considered when AEC exceeds 1.5 ×10⁹/L for more than 6 months with end-organ involvement. These reference ranges are for adults; paediatric values differ. Always interpret in the context of symptoms, clinical history, and the full CBC report.

The most common causes worldwide are parasitic infections (particularly helminths) and allergic/atopic conditions such as asthma, hay fever, and eczema. Other causes include drug hypersensitivity reactions, autoimmune conditions (e.g. eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis), and, at persistently high counts, haematological malignancies or primary hypereosinophilic syndrome.
The eosinophil percentage is relative to the total WBC; it can be misleadingly high when other cell lines are low, or misleadingly low when the WBC is elevated. The AEC directly measures how many eosinophils are circulating per unit volume and is a more clinically reliable value for assessing eosinophilia.
