DUDIT Calculator — Drug Use Disorders Identification Test

The DUDIT is an 11-question validated screening instrument for identifying drug-related problems. Answer each question honestly to get your score (0–44) and see how it compares with the published positive-screen thresholds for harmful drug use and probable dependence.

Biological sex

The positive-screen threshold differs by sex (men ≥ 6, women ≥ 2)

Q1 — How often do you use drugs other than alcohol?

Q2 — Do you use more than one type of drug on the same occasion?

Q3 — How many times do you take drugs on a typical day when you use drugs?

Q4 — How often are you influenced heavily by drugs?

Q5 — Over the past year, have you felt that your longing for drugs was so strong you couldn't resist it?

Q6 — Has it happened, over the past year, that you have not been able to stop taking drugs once you started?

Q7 — How often over the past year have you taken drugs and then neglected to do something you should have done?

Q8 — How often over the past year have you needed to take a drug the morning after heavy drug use the day before?

Q9 — How often over the past year have you had guilt feelings or a bad conscience because you used drugs?

Q10 — Have you or anyone else been hurt (mentally or physically) because you used drugs?

Q11 — Has a relative, friend, doctor or anyone else been worried about your drug use or asked you to stop?

Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Sum all 11 DUDIT item scores (Q1–Q9: 0–4 each; Q10–Q11: 0, 2, or 4 each) for a total of 0–44. A score of ≥ 6 (men) or ≥ 2 (women) is a positive screen for likely harmful drug use. A score ≥ 25 indicates probable dependence. A positive result warrants professional follow-up — it is not a diagnosis.

Formula
DUDIT score = Q1+Q2+Q3+Q4+Q5+Q6+Q7+Q8+Q9+Q10+Q11 (Q1–Q9: 0–4; Q10–Q11: 0, 2, or 4)
How this is calculated

The Drug Use Disorders Identification Test (DUDIT) was developed by Berman et al. (2005) as a parallel to the alcohol AUDIT screening tool. It consists of 11 questions covering the frequency and quantity of drug use (Q1–Q3), indicators of dependence and loss of control (Q4–Q6), consequences and withdrawal-like behaviours (Q7–Q9), and harm to self or others (Q10–Q11). Questions 1–9 are scored on a 0–4 frequency scale; questions 10 and 11 use a 0/2/4 scale for yes/no/recency answers. The total ranges from 0 to 44.

The positive-screen thresholds recommended in the original validation are: a score of 6 or above for men, and 2 or above for women. These asymmetric thresholds reflect both biological and social differences in drug use patterns across sexes. A score at or above the threshold suggests harmful drug use warranting further clinical assessment, not a diagnosis. A score of 25 or above is associated with probable drug dependence in the validation studies.

DUDIT covers all substances other than alcohol (which is screened by AUDIT). It has been validated across multiple countries and treatment settings and is endorsed by several European and Scandinavian health authorities. As with all screening tools, a positive score should be followed by a structured clinical interview.

Frequently asked questions

A score at or above the threshold (≥ 6 for men, ≥ 2 for women) suggests a pattern of drug use that may constitute harmful use or dependence. It is a flag, not a diagnosis. Clinical guidelines recommend a detailed assessment by a healthcare professional, which may include a structured interview and possibly urine toxicology.

DUDIT covers all psychoactive substances except alcohol — including cannabis, stimulants (cocaine, amphetamines), opioids, benzodiazepines, hallucinogens and any other drugs used to alter mood or perception, whether illegal or misused prescription medicines. Alcohol is assessed separately with AUDIT.

Yes — DUDIT was designed as a self-report tool. However, self-report screening tools are subject to under-reporting when individuals are reluctant to disclose sensitive behaviours. In clinical settings, administration by a trained professional (paper or interview) tends to improve accuracy. This calculator is for information only — it does not replace clinical assessment.
