Dog Heat Cycle Calculator — Next Season Predictor

Enter the date your dog's last heat began and her typical cycle length, and the calculator predicts the next heat start date, the likely fertile window (days 9–18 of that cycle), and how far through the current inter-heat interval she is.

days

Most dogs cycle every 6 months (180 days). Small breeds may cycle every 4 months; giant breeds every 12 months.

Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Add your dog's inter-heat interval (commonly 180 days) to the last heat start date to get the next heat date. The fertile window is approximately days 9–18 of that heat. Visible discharge typically lasts about 21 days. Individual variation is large — track real dates over 2–3 cycles.

Formula
Next heat = last heat start + cycle length (days) • Fertile window ≈ days 9–18 of heat • Heat signs ≈ 21 days total
How this is calculated

The canine oestrous cycle has four stages. Proestrus (roughly the first 9 days) is marked by a bloody vaginal discharge and swelling; the female attracts males but is not yet fertile. Estrus (approximately days 9–18) is the fertile window during which the female will accept mating — ovulation typically occurs on days 10–14. Diestrus follows whether or not mating occurred, lasting 60–90 days (this is why an unmated bitch can have a "false pregnancy"). Anestrus is the quiet resting period that makes up the remainder of the inter-oestrous interval.

The interval between heat cycles varies considerably by individual and breed: most dogs cycle every 5–7 months (the default here is 180 days), small breeds can cycle as often as every 4 months, and giant breeds such as the Great Dane and Mastiff may cycle only once a year. Track your dog's actual dates over two or three cycles to calibrate the figure.

This calculator gives estimated dates only. Actual ovulation timing requires progesterone blood tests and/or vaginal cytology performed by a vet — critical for planned breeding or for avoiding unwanted pregnancy at the right stage. The fertile window shown here is a statistical average and can shift by several days in any individual dog.

Frequently asked questions

Early signs include swelling of the vulva, a bloody or straw-coloured discharge, increased urination, and attracting attention from male dogs. The first day of visible discharge is conventionally recorded as day 1 of the cycle.

Spaying during heat is possible but carries a higher surgical risk because the uterus is more vascular. Most vets recommend waiting until 8–12 weeks after the heat ends. Discuss timing with your vet.

These are statistical averages. Actual cycle length varies by breed, individual health, stress, and season (some breeds are photoperiod-sensitive). For breeding purposes, hormone testing is the only reliable way to confirm ovulation.
