Dog Harness Size Calculator
Getting the harness size right is essential for safety and comfort. Measure the widest part of your dog's chest (just behind the front legs) and this calculator maps that girth to the standard XS–XXL harness size, with a warning if you are near a size boundary.

How does this calculator work?
Measure the chest circumference just behind the front legs. Map to size: XS ≤18 in, S ≤24 in, M ≤28 in, L ≤33 in, XL ≤40 in, XXL >40 in. If you are within 1.5 in of the upper limit, consider the next size up. Always verify with the brand's own size chart.
Formula
How this is calculated
The chest girth — the circumference around the widest part of the chest, measured just behind the front legs — is the single most important harness measurement. Most harness brands publish a size chart based on this dimension. The size bands used here (XS: up to 18 in, S: up to 24 in, M: up to 28 in, L: up to 33 in, XL: up to 40 in, XXL: 40+ in) reflect the most common industry sizing and correspond to adjustable ranges rather than fixed points, so a dog measuring 22 in might fit comfortably into both a Small (at the top end) and a Medium (at the lower end), depending on the brand.
If your dog's girth is within about 1.5 inches of the upper limit of a size, the calculator suggests trying the next size up — this leaves room for growth in puppies and for a thick winter coat in double-coated breeds. Always check the specific manufacturer's chart before purchasing, as sizing varies between harness styles (step-in, vest, Y-front, H-style).
For an accurate reading, use a soft tape measure and run it snugly but not tightly around the chest. You should be able to slide two fingers under the tape. Avoid measuring over thick fur — part the fur so the tape contacts the skin.
Frequently asked questions
For step-in harnesses and some vest styles, the neck circumference is a secondary fit check. However, chest girth is always the primary sizing dimension. If a brand's chart also lists neck range, confirm your dog's neck girth (measured around the base of the neck) falls within that band for the chosen size.
Choose the larger size if the dog is still growing, has a broad chest, or the harness style is not highly adjustable. Choose the smaller size if it falls within the adjustment range and you want a snug, no-pull fit. When possible, try the harness before buying.
A well-fitted harness lets you slide two fingers flat between the harness and your dog's body all the way around. It should not restrict movement of the shoulders or create pressure points under the front legs.
