Divide Fractions Calculator

Divide any two fractions by entering the numerators and denominators. The calculator multiplies by the reciprocal of the second fraction, simplifies by the greatest common divisor, and shows both the fraction and decimal result.

Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

To divide (a/b) by (c/d): multiply by the reciprocal to get (a·d)/(b·c), then simplify by dividing both parts by their GCD. For example, (3/4)÷(2/5) = (3×5)/(4×2) = 15/8 = 1.875. Enter numerators and denominators to get the simplified fraction and decimal value.

Formula
(a/b) ÷ (c/d) = (a×d) / (b×c)
How this is calculated

Dividing fractions uses the "keep, change, flip" rule: keep the first fraction, change the division to multiplication, and flip (take the reciprocal of) the second fraction. So (a/b) ÷ (c/d) becomes (a/b) × (d/c) = (a·d)/(b·c).

The resulting fraction is then simplified to lowest terms by finding the greatest common divisor (GCD) of the numerator and denominator and dividing both by it. Any negative sign is moved to the numerator so the denominator stays positive. The decimal value is the simplified numerator divided by the simplified denominator.

Division is undefined when the divisor (second fraction) has numerator 0, since that would mean dividing by zero. A denominator of 0 in either fraction is also undefined and is rejected with an error. This calculator only accepts integer numerators and denominators.

Frequently asked questions

Multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second: (a/b) ÷ (c/d) = (a/b) × (d/c) = (a·d)/(b·c). Then simplify the result by dividing numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor.

Division is the inverse of multiplication. Multiplying by the reciprocal (1 over the divisor) is mathematically equivalent to division, and it avoids any complex fraction manipulation.

The calculator shows the fully simplified fraction and its decimal equivalent. An improper fraction (where numerator > denominator) is a valid result and is displayed as-is; you can convert it to a mixed number by dividing the numerator by the denominator.
