DMPV = (Actual Price − Standard Price) × Actual Quantity. A negative result is favorable (paid less than standard); positive is unfavorable (paid more). Used in standard-costing management accounting to isolate purchasing price performance from material consumption efficiency.

How this is calculated
In standard costing, a business sets a budgeted (standard) price for each unit of raw material before the period begins. At period end, the actual price paid is compared to that standard. The direct material price variance (DMPV) quantifies the total impact: DMPV = (AP − SP) × AQ, where AP is the actual price per unit, SP is the standard price per unit, and AQ is the actual quantity purchased.
A negative result means AP < SP — you paid less per unit than budgeted, which is a favorable (F) variance and improves profit. A positive result means AP > SP — you paid more than the standard, giving an unfavorable (U) variance that signals a cost overrun. Zero means prices matched exactly.
Managers investigate significant variances to understand the root cause: favorable variances may reflect bulk discounts, lower-grade materials, or a favorable market, while unfavorable variances may signal supply shortages, quality upgrades, or poor purchasing. Note that a favorable price variance can sometimes coincide with an unfavorable usage variance if cheaper materials waste more.

The price variance isolates the cost of paying more (or less) per unit than standard, holding actual quantity fixed. The usage variance measures whether more or less material was consumed than the standard quantity allowed for actual production. Together they explain the total direct material cost variance.
A favorable price variance can be misleading if it is achieved by buying cheaper, lower-quality materials that then cause a higher usage variance (more waste or rework) or quality problems in the finished product. Always review price and usage variances together.
It depends on the standard-costing model: some systems calculate DMPV at the point of purchase (using quantity purchased), others at the point of usage. Using quantity purchased gives faster feedback on purchasing decisions and is the more common approach.
