How does this calculator work?

How this is calculated

The DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung) setting controls how much force releases a ski binding — too low and the binding opens in normal turns; too high and it fails to release in a fall, risking injury. ISO 11088 (last revised 2018) defines the lookup table that correlates skier weight, boot sole length (BSL) and skier type to a release torque code.

The calculation has four steps. First, weight alone determines a base code letter (A through W+): a 70 kg skier lands around code K. Second, the boot sole length (BSL) adjusts the code up or down — longer boots have more leverage and need a slightly stiffer setting; shorter boots need a lower setting. Standard BSL for adults is roughly 270–290 mm. Third, skier type shifts the code: Type 1 (cautious, slow, or learning) subtracts one code; Type 3 (fast, aggressive) adds one; Type 3+ (expert/racer) adds two. Finally, age ≥ 50 or < 10 reduces the code by one for additional safety margin.

This calculator uses the simplified ISO 11088 reference table. Real-world settings also depend on the specific binding model, binding mounting, and a technician's calibrated torque measurement. The DIN values shown here (editable estimates based on the 2018 standard) must be verified with a certified ski mechanic before skiing.

Frequently asked questions

The DIN number controls the release torque of the binding. A lower DIN releases more easily under twisting or lateral force, protecting the leg. A higher DIN holds firm during aggressive skiing but requires more force to release — increasing injury risk if set too high for the skier's weight and style.

BSL is the length of the boot's sole in millimetres, typically printed on the sole itself or in the boot specifications. Adult boots commonly range from 250 mm (small sizes) to 330+ mm (large sizes). It is not the same as the boot's shoe size.

Manufacturers and ski-safety organisations recommend against self-adjusting DIN settings without a calibrated torque tester. Home-adjusted bindings may be off from the nominal value shown on the indicator. A certified ski shop sets the binding with a calibrated machine and tests release in both the toe and heel, which this calculator cannot replicate.
