A DART case is a recordable injury resulting in days away, restricted activity, or job transfer. How this is calculated
The DART rate normalises workplace injury frequency to a standard base of 100 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees working one year. The 200,000-hour base is derived from 100 workers × 50 weeks × 40 hours per week. Dividing qualifying incidents by actual hours worked and multiplying by 200,000 gives a rate comparable across organisations of any size or reporting period.
A DART case is any OSHA-recordable injury or illness resulting in at least one of: (1) days away from work, (2) restricted work activity (light duty), or (3) job transfer to another position. Near-misses and first-aid-only events are not counted. DART is a subset of TRIR (Total Recordable Incident Rate), which includes all OSHA recordables — a rate that requires only medical treatment beyond first aid enters TRIR but not DART.
BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics) publishes industry-specific DART rates annually; private-sector averages in recent years have been roughly 1.0–1.5. A rate below your industry benchmark suggests strong safety performance; a rate substantially above it warrants a review of hazard controls, near-miss reporting, and return-to-work programmes.
