Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Metric tons = cubic meters × density (kg/m³) ÷ 1000. Key densities (2025 reference): water 1000, concrete 2400, sand 1600, gravel 1680, steel 7850 kg/m³. Values are typical bulk densities — use Custom density for precision. Multiply metric tons by 1.10231 for US short tons.

Formula
Weight (metric tons) = Volume (m³) × Density (kg/m³) ÷ 1000
How this is calculated

To convert cubic meters to tons you must multiply the volume by the material's density (mass per unit volume). Density in kg/m³ times volume in m³ gives kilograms; dividing by 1000 gives metric tons (also called tonnes). The density values in this calculator are standard bulk reference values (2025): water is exactly 1000 kg/m³ at 4 °C, standard structural concrete is 2400 kg/m³, dry sand around 1600 kg/m³, and steel 7850 kg/m³.

Bulk materials such as soil, sand and gravel vary significantly with moisture and compaction. Wet sand can be 20% denser than dry sand. Topsoil values range from 1100 to 1600 kg/m³ depending on clay and organic content. For regulatory compliance, shipping, or structural load calculations, always measure the actual material or source density data from a certified lab — use the Custom density option to enter measured values.

Once the metric ton value is computed, the short ton (used in the United States: 1 short ton = 907.185 kg = 0.907185 t) and the long ton (used in the UK: 1 long ton = 1016.05 kg = 1.01605 t) follow from exact conversion factors.

Frequently asked questions

Exactly 1 metric ton (tonne). Water's density is 1000 kg/m³ at 4 °C, so 1 m³ × 1000 kg/m³ ÷ 1000 = 1 metric ton. This is not a coincidence — the kilogram was originally defined as the mass of 1 liter of water.

A metric ton (tonne) = 1000 kg = 2204.62 lb. A US short ton = 2000 lb ≈ 907.185 kg ≈ 0.9072 t. A UK long ton = 2240 lb ≈ 1016.05 kg ≈ 1.0160 t. Always specify which ton when communicating internationally.

Standard reinforced concrete weighs approximately 2400 kg/m³ = 2.4 metric tons per cubic meter. Lightweight concrete is about 1680 kg/m³. The exact figure depends on aggregate type, water/cement ratio and reinforcement.
