Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

The surface area of a cube is SA = 6s², where s is the side length. A cube has six equal square faces, each with area s², so multiply by 6. A 5-unit cube has a surface area of 150 square units. Enter any side length above to get the exact result.

Formula
SA = 6 × s² • Face area = s² • Space diagonal = s√3
How this is calculated

A cube has six identical square faces. The total surface area is simply the area of one face (s²) multiplied by six: SA = 6s². This is one of the most fundamental formulas in geometry and applies any time you need to know how much material covers the outside of a cube — paint, wrapping paper, sheet metal or packaging.

The calculator also shows the area of a single face (s²), the perimeter of one face (4s), and the space diagonal — the longest straight line through the cube, which runs from one corner to the opposite corner and has length s√3 (derived from applying the Pythagorean theorem twice: the face diagonal is s√2, and the space diagonal is √(s² + (s√2)²) = s√3).

All four results are in consistent units: if s is in centimetres, the surface area is in cm², the perimeter in cm, and the diagonal in cm. The formula holds for any positive real side length — the calculator returns no result for zero or negative inputs.

Frequently asked questions

The total surface area of a cube is SA = 6s², where s is the side length. A cube has six identical square faces, each with area s², so the total is 6 times that.

From the volume V, find the side length s = V^(1/3) (cube root), then apply SA = 6s². For example, if V = 27 cm³ then s = 3 cm and SA = 54 cm².

Face area is the area of a single square face of the cube (s²). Surface area is the sum of all six faces (6s²). The surface area is always six times the face area.
