Volume (s³)
s = 4
All 12 edges equal s — volume fills s × s × s
Step by step
  1. 1

    Square the edge

    4 × 4 = 16
    Each face of the cube has area s².
  2. 2

    Volume = s²× s

    16 × 4 = 64

Formula
Volume = s³; Surface area = 6s²; Space diagonal = s × √3
How this is calculated

A cube is fully described by one measurement: the edge length s, the distance along any of its twelve equal sides. Because all faces are identical squares and all edges share that length, every result here is derived from s alone, using whatever single unit you enter.

Volume is s³ — the edge cubed — since the cube measures s in width, depth and height, and it comes out in your unit cubed. Surface area is 6s²: each of the six square faces has area s², and there are six of them, so the result is in your unit squared. The space diagonal, the longest straight line through the interior from one corner to the opposite corner, is s × √3 (√3 ≈ 1.7321), which follows from applying the Pythagorean theorem twice across three perpendicular edges.

The edge must be a positive number; zero or negative input returns no result. The bar chart compares the three characteristic lengths — edge, face diagonal (s × √2) and space diagonal (s × √3) — all in the same length unit. Results are rounded to four decimals, so diagonal values involving irrational roots are approximate.

About this calculator

A cube is a regular hexahedron: a three-dimensional solid with six identical square faces, twelve equal edges and eight vertices. Because every edge has the same length, its volume is the edge cubed and its surface area is six times the area of one face.

The space diagonal runs from one corner to the opposite corner through the interior of the cube and equals the edge multiplied by √3 (about 1.7321). Cubes are the basis of volume measurement and appear constantly in packaging and 3D modeling.

Frequently asked questions

Raise the edge length to the third power (s³). A cube with edge 4 has a volume of 64 cubic units.

It is the longest internal line, from one corner to the opposite corner, equal to s × √3. For an edge of 4 it is about 6.93 units.

A cube has 6 square faces, 12 edges of equal length and 8 vertices. The total surface area is 6 × s².
