Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Cow gestation averages 283 days (range 278–292 by breed). Add the breed's gestation length to the mating date to get the expected calving date. Dairy breeds calve earlier (~279 days), continental beef breeds later (~289–292 days). Monitor closely 14 days either side of the predicted date.

Formula
Expected calving date = Mating date + Breed gestation length (days)
How this is calculated

Bovine gestation averages 283 days (about 9 months and 9 days) from conception to birth, but the actual duration varies by breed. Dairy breeds like Holstein and Jersey tend toward the shorter end (278–279 days), while continental beef breeds such as Charolais, Limousin and Brahman carry longer (289–292 days). Breed-specific averages used here are drawn from peer-reviewed veterinary references; actual calving can occur 7–10 days either side of the predicted date.

The calculator adds the breed gestation length to the entered mating or confirmed conception date to produce the expected calving date. The progress bar shows where today falls along the full gestation timeline. If AI (artificial insemination) was used, the conception date is the date of insemination. For natural service, use the last observed breeding date.

Gestation can be shortened by nutritional deficiencies, twins, or stress, and lengthened in cold climates or by certain genetics. The first-calf (heifer) gestation is typically 2–3 days longer than subsequent calvings in the same cow. For high-value or first-calf heifers, consult a veterinarian for close monitoring in the final 2 weeks.

Frequently asked questions

The predicted date is accurate on average for the breed, but individual variation is ±7–10 days in most beef breeds. Twins and triplets typically arrive 3–7 days early. Nutritional status, climate, and the individual cow's history all shift the date. Use the predicted date as the centre of a monitoring window — step up observation from about 2 weeks before until 10 days after.

Begin increased monitoring from about 14 days before the predicted date. Key pre-calving signs include udder filling (bagging up) 4–6 weeks before, relaxation of the pelvic ligaments 12–24 hours before, and restless behaviour or seeking isolation in the final 1–2 hours. Heifers are more likely to need assistance, so they warrant closer monitoring than experienced cows.

If you missed the breeding event, a pregnancy diagnosis by rectal palpation or transrectal ultrasound — typically done by a vet at 35–45 days after the breeding season — can establish gestational age and provide a reliable calving estimate. Blood tests for bovine pregnancy-associated glycoproteins (PAGs) can detect pregnancy from about 28 days post-conception.
