Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Cost per mile = total annual vehicle costs ÷ miles driven. The main components are fuel, maintenance, insurance, depreciation and miscellaneous fees. Depreciation is often the biggest item. The 2024 IRS business rate is 67 ¢/mile — your own figure may vary with vehicle type, age and usage.

Formula
Cost per mile = (Fuel + Maintenance + Insurance + Depreciation + Other) / Miles driven
How this is calculated

The sticker price of a vehicle is only the beginning. The full cost of ownership includes fuel (or electricity), routine maintenance (oil changes, tyres, brakes), insurance premiums, registration fees, parking, tolls, and crucially, depreciation — the loss in resale value that occurs year by year. Adding these together and dividing by the number of miles driven in the same period gives the true per-mile cost.

Depreciation is often the largest single cost component, especially in the first few years of ownership. A car bought for $30,000 and sold for $18,000 five years later loses $2,400 per year on average regardless of how much it is driven. Fuel cost, by contrast, scales directly with mileage. Together, the fixed (insurance, depreciation, registration) and variable (fuel, maintenance) costs make the cost per mile highest when you drive least and improve as annual mileage rises.

The IRS standard mileage rate for 2024 is 67 cents per mile for business use — a useful benchmark. Your actual figure may be higher or lower depending on vehicle type, age, fuel prices and local insurance rates. All figures are editable estimates; enter your own costs.

Frequently asked questions

A common rule of thumb is to subtract the expected resale value after one year from the current value. Online valuation tools (Carfax, Edmunds, Auto Trader) give market estimates. New cars typically lose 15–25% in the first year and 10–15% per year thereafter. Older vehicles depreciate more slowly.

The IRS set the standard mileage rate at 67 cents per mile for business use in 2024 (up from 65.5 cents in 2023). This is an editable benchmark, not a cap — your actual cost per mile may differ. Always verify with the IRS website for the current year.

Interest on a car loan can be entered under "Other annual costs." Calculate total interest for the year (monthly payment × 12 minus principal repaid) and add it there to see its contribution to your per-mile cost.
