How does this calculator work?
Multiply your amount by the "from" unit's mL equivalent, then divide by the "to" unit's mL value. US standards: 1 cup = 236.6 mL = 16 tbsp = 48 tsp = 8 fl oz. Select any two units and enter your amount to get instant side-by-side conversions for all common cooking volumes.
Formula
How this is calculated
Every cooking volume unit has a fixed number of millilitres. Converting is a two-step multiplication: first multiply the input amount by the "from" unit's mL value to get the total volume in mL, then divide by the "to" unit's mL value. The conversion ratios used here are the standard US customary liquid measures (1 US cup = 236.588 mL, 1 teaspoon = 4.929 mL, 1 tablespoon = 14.787 mL, 1 fluid ounce = 29.574 mL).
Not all countries use the same cup size — the US cup (236.6 mL), the metric cup used in Australia and Canada (250 mL) and the UK imperial cup (284 mL) all differ. This calculator uses the US cup, which is the most common in recipe websites globally. If your recipe uses a different cup, multiply by 250/236.6 (metric) or 284/236.6 (UK imperial) before converting.
Dry ingredients like flour and sugar should ideally be measured by weight, not volume, because density varies with how tightly they are packed. Use this calculator for liquids and liquid-like ingredients (water, oil, milk, honey) where volume measurements are reliable.
Frequently asked questions
There are 16 tablespoons in 1 US cup (236.588 mL ÷ 14.787 mL). So ¼ cup = 4 tbsp, ⅓ cup ≈ 5.33 tbsp, and ½ cup = 8 tbsp.
Exactly 3 teaspoons equal 1 tablespoon in US measurements (14.787 mL ÷ 4.929 mL ≈ 3). This is a universal kitchen ratio.
Volume conversions are always mathematically exact, but for dry ingredients the volume-to-weight relationship varies with packing density. A cup of sifted flour weighs about 120 g, while a cup of packed flour can be 150 g. For baking precision, use a kitchen scale.
