How this is calculated
The "centigrade" scale was developed in the 18th century and takes its name from Latin: "centi" (100) and "gradus" (steps), because it places 100 equal degrees between the freezing point (0°) and boiling point (100°) of water at standard pressure. The scale was renamed "Celsius" in 1948 by the International Committee of Weights and Measures (CGPM) to honour Swedish astronomer Anders Celsius, who devised a similar scale in 1742. The scale itself did not change — only the name did.
Because they are identical, 1 centigrade degree equals exactly 1 Celsius degree, and any centigrade value equals the same number in Celsius. No arithmetic is required.
