How does this calculator work?
Monthly bill = (base plan + data add-on + device payment + insurance) × number of lines, then add taxes and fees as a percentage. A single $40 plan with $10 data, $30 device payment, $15 insurance and 12% tax comes to $106/month or $1,272/year. Use the calculator to compare plans by swapping individual line items.
Formula
How this is calculated
A cell phone bill layers several charges on top of each other. The base plan covers your core allocation of calls, texts and a data allowance. Carriers commonly add per-line fees for unlimited data upgrades, mobile hotspot or international access. If you are financing a new phone on an installment plan, a device payment is added per line each month. Device insurance or protection plans add another optional charge.
All per-line charges are multiplied by the number of lines on the account — family and business plans can look cheap per line but add up quickly. Once the service subtotal is calculated, taxes and regulatory fees (such as the US Universal Service Fund surcharge, 911 fees, and state or local sales taxes) are applied as a percentage of the bill. US wireless taxes average around 12–16% nationally but can exceed 25% in some states. Carrier fees not labeled as taxes also commonly add $1–5 per line.
This calculator uses editable estimates throughout — carrier pricing, promotional discounts and local tax rates vary widely by region and plan vintage. Enter the actual figures from your most recent bill for the closest match.
Frequently asked questions
A single unlimited line from a major US carrier (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile) costs roughly $45–$80 before taxes. Adding a financed device payment ($25–$50), insurance ($12–$20) and taxes (12–16%) typically brings the all-in monthly cost per line to $85–$130.
Usually yes — major carriers typically discount each additional line by $5–$20/month, so a four-line family plan may cost $30–$50/month less than four individual plans. However, device payments, insurance and taxes are still charged per line, so the total bill can still be substantial.
US wireless bills include federal USF surcharges, state and local taxes, 911 fees, and carrier-imposed regulatory-cost recovery fees. The combined rate varies by state — enter the percentage shown in the taxes-and-fees section of your bill for the most accurate estimate.
