How does this calculator work?

Multiply your daily calories by the carbohydrate percentage, then divide by 4 (kcal/g). For protein divide by 4; for fat divide by 9. On a 2,000 kcal diet at 50/25/25, that is 250 g carbs, 125 g protein and ~56 g fat. Percentages are normalised automatically if they do not sum to 100.

How this is calculated

Each macronutrient carries a fixed caloric density: carbohydrates and protein each yield 4 kilocalories per gram, while fat yields 9 kilocalories per gram. Given a total daily calorie target and the percentage you want from each macro, the calculator first allocates the kilocalories to each category and then divides by the appropriate caloric density to give grams.

If your three percentages do not sum to exactly 100%, the calculator normalises them proportionally — so 50/25/25 and 2/1/1 produce identical gram targets. This lets you experiment freely without needing to sum to 100 manually.

Common macro splits vary by goal: a general balanced diet often sits at 50% carbs / 25% protein / 25% fat; strength athletes frequently target 40/30/30; ketogenic diets restrict carbs to under 10% and push fat above 60%. The gram targets are starting points — individual needs depend on body composition, activity level and metabolic rate, which a registered dietitian can personalise.

The caloric values come from combustion calorimetry corrected for biological absorption, established by Atwater in the 1890s. Fat is energy-dense because its carbon chains are more reduced (more C–H bonds to oxidise). This is why even a small amount of fat contributes heavily to a meal's calories.

In the US, dietary fibre is subtracted to give "net carbs" on nutrition labels. This calculator computes total carb grams from calories. If you track net carbs (common on ketogenic diets to manage ketosis), subtract your estimated daily fibre intake from the result.
