Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Multiply slices by grams per slice to get total spread weight, then divide by the jar size to find how many containers to buy. Calories equal total grams times the kcal-per-gram of your chosen spread. Defaults use typical serving sizes; edit any field to match your actual portion.

Formula
Total spread = slices × g per slice • Containers needed = total spread ÷ container size • Calories = total spread (g) × kcal per gram
How this is calculated

The calculator multiplies the number of slices by the grams of spread per slice to find the total weight needed. Default gram-per-slice values come from typical serving sizes (about 5 g for butter, 15 g for jam, 20 g for peanut butter), but you can edit them freely.

Containers needed is the total spread weight divided by the net weight of the jar you buy, so you know whether one jar is enough or if you need two. Rounding up gives the whole-container count to actually purchase. The cost estimate multiplies containers needed (including the partial fraction) by the unit price.

Calories are calculated from USDA food-composition figures for each spread type: butter ≈ 7.17 kcal/g, peanut butter ≈ 5.88 kcal/g, jam ≈ 2.50 kcal/g, avocado ≈ 1.60 kcal/g. These figures are average values; actual calorie density varies by brand and water content.

Frequently asked questions

A light spread is about 3–5 g per slice; a generous American-style portion is closer to 10–12 g. The calculator defaults to 5 g — a standard serving — but you can enter your own measured amount for a more accurate result.

At 15 g of jam per slice and two slices a day, you use about 30 g a day, so a 250 g jar lasts roughly 8 days. Enter your own slices-per-day and grams-per-slice in the calculator to find the exact figure for your household.

Yes — choose any spread from the list to set a starting calorie density, then adjust the grams-per-slice field to match your actual portion. The calorie density of unlisted spreads can be found on the nutrition label (kcal per 100 g ÷ 100).
