The Bradford Factor was developed at Bradford University in the 1980s to highlight that multiple short, unplanned absences disrupt operations more than a single long absence of the same total duration. The formula squares the spell count S before multiplying by total days D, so the impact of frequent absences compounds rapidly: four spells of one day each score 4² × 4 = 64, while one absence of four days scores 1² × 4 = 4 — a 16× difference for the same time lost.
