How does this calculator work?
Bounce rate = bounced sessions ÷ total sessions × 100%. Engagement rate is the inverse (100% − bounce rate). Industry benchmarks: under 40% is strong for landing pages; 60–80% is typical for blogs. A high bounce rate is only a problem when paired with poor conversions or short session duration.

How this is calculated
A bounce is a session in which the user viewed only a single page and left without any further interaction — no click, no scroll event, no second page. Google Analytics (Universal Analytics) counted a bounce as any session that did not trigger a second hit; GA4 redefined it as any session that was not "engaged" (lasted under 10 seconds, had no conversion, and had fewer than two page views).
The bounce rate is simply the percentage of all sessions that were bounces. A high bounce rate is not always bad: a blog article that answers a question fully might have a 90% bounce rate and still be highly effective, because visitors got what they came for. In contrast, a landing page with a high bounce rate and low conversion is a signal that the page is not meeting visitor expectations.
Industry benchmarks (2024 figures) vary widely by site type: blogs and news sites typically run 65–90%; e-commerce pages 20–45%; B2B lead-gen pages 25–55%. Use the ranges as a rough guide, and always segment by traffic source and device — direct traffic often bounces less than social or display ad traffic.

It depends heavily on the type of page. For e-commerce product pages or landing pages, below 40% is strong. For content/blog pages, 60–80% is completely normal because readers often finish an article and leave satisfied. Compare your rate against your own site's historical baseline and by traffic source rather than a single industry average.
Universal Analytics counted any session with only one hit as a bounce. GA4 flipped the metric: it reports engagement rate (sessions lasting 10+ seconds, with a conversion, or with 2+ page views) and defines bounce rate as 100% minus engagement rate. The numbers are not directly comparable across the two systems.
Common tactics include improving page load speed, matching ad/keyword intent to page content, adding clear calls-to-action, improving mobile layout, and using internal links to guide visitors deeper. First identify the high-bounce entry pages and traffic sources to focus efforts where they matter most.
