How does this calculator work?
Standard bed sizes range from a Twin (96.5 × 190.5 cm) to a California King (182.9 × 213.4 cm). Enter your room dimensions to check fit: aim for at least 60 cm of clearance on each accessible side. EU sizes differ slightly from US sizes.
Formula
How this is calculated
Each bed size is stored with its standard width and length in centimetres. The floor area is simply width × length converted to square metres (÷ 10 000). If you enter room dimensions, the calculator computes the room's floor area the same way and expresses the bed's footprint as a percentage of the room, helping you visualise how much floor space the bed will occupy.
Clearance is the space left between the edge of the bed and the nearest wall. Side clearance is (room width − bed width) ÷ 2 assuming the bed is centred; foot clearance is room length − bed length. Interior designers typically recommend a minimum of 60 cm of walkway on the sides and at the foot for comfortable daily use — less than that can feel cramped.
Sizes shown are the standard mattress dimensions, not the bed frame, which is typically 5–15 cm wider and longer. Allow for that extra when measuring your room.
Frequently asked questions
A US Queen is 152 cm × 203 cm (60″ × 80″); a US King is 193 cm × 203 cm (76″ × 80″). The King is 41 cm wider — enough for two adults to sleep without disturbing each other — but needs a room at least 370 cm wide to keep 60 cm clearance on each side.
No. A US Queen (152 × 203 cm) is slightly wider and longer than a EU Queen (160 × 200 cm), but the EU Queen is wider. A US King (193 × 203 cm) is wider than a EU King (180 × 200 cm). Mattresses are not interchangeable between markets.
The general rule is at least 60 cm (about 24 inches) on each side you walk along, and at least 60 cm at the foot. If one side is against a wall, 45 cm may be workable as a secondary side. Less than that makes daily access — making the bed, opening drawers — awkward.
