How this is calculated

The arithmetic mean of a set of percentages is computed by summing all values and dividing by the count — the same formula as any other simple average. This calculator accepts up to five percentage values, skips any blank fields, and reports the mean along with the sum, range and count of the entered values.

This simple averaging is appropriate when each percentage represents a measurement of the same kind carried out on equally-sized groups or samples. For example, averaging four test scores out of 100 (each scored on the same 100-point scale) gives a meaningful overall result.

A critical caveat: if the percentages come from groups of different sizes, simple averaging can be misleading. Suppose Group A (10 people) scored 90% and Group B (90 people) scored 10% — the simple average is 50%, but the true combined percentage is 18%. Whenever the denominator differs between values, use a weighted average (sum of (value × weight) divided by sum of weights) instead. This calculator computes the unweighted mean only.

Frequently asked questions

When the groups producing each percentage are different sizes. For instance, averaging a 10% rate from a large group with a 90% rate from a small group gives 50%, but the correct overall rate is much closer to 10%. Always use a weighted average (weighting each percentage by its group size) when denominators differ.

Yes, as long as each test is scored on the same scale (e.g., all out of 100). If tests carry different weights or maximum marks, you need a weighted average: multiply each score by its weight, sum those products, and divide by the total weight.

Only if you enter values above 100%. Percentages themselves can legally exceed 100% — for example, year-over-year growth of 150%. This calculator places no upper limit if you remove the field maximum, but the usual 0–100% range applies for most practical uses.
