How does this calculator work?

How this is calculated
The crude mortality rate is the simplest measure: it divides the number of deaths by the total population at risk over a defined period and expresses the result as a percentage. If the study period is one year, the crude and annual rates coincide; for multi-year studies the annual rate is back-calculated using the complement survival formula [1 − (1 − p)^(1/t)] × 100, which gives the single-year rate that would compound to the observed cumulative mortality over t years.
This calculator is used in wildlife biology, veterinary epidemiology, conservation ecology, and livestock management. The "population at risk" should be the number of individuals at the beginning of the study period (or an appropriate mid-period estimate for longer studies). Deaths include all causes unless a cause-specific rate is wanted, in which case only count those deaths.
Limitations to keep in mind: the formula assumes a closed population (no immigration or emigration) and constant mortality risk across the period. For open populations or age-structured analyses, dedicated mark-recapture or life-table methods are more appropriate. The deaths-per-1,000 figure is simply the rate scaled up for readability when the crude percentage is very small.
