Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

The USAF PFA scores the 1.5-mile run (0–60 pts), push-ups in 1 minute (0–20 pts), and abdominal circumference (0–20 pts) for a maximum of 100. Passing requires ≥75 composite AND passing each component individually. Scoring thresholds are gender- and age-specific per AFI 36-2905 (2023 estimates — verify at mypers.af.mil).

Formula
Composite = Run (0–60 pts) + Push-Ups (0–20 pts) + Abdominal circumference (0–20 pts) • Pass requires ≥75 composite AND all three components meeting their minimums
How this is calculated

The USAF Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) evaluates aerobic endurance, muscular fitness and body composition. The aerobic component — the 1.5-mile run — carries 60 of the 100 possible points, making it the most important factor. Push-ups (maximum repetitions in 1 minute) contribute 20 points, and abdominal circumference (measuring core fitness and body composition) contributes the remaining 20 points.

Scoring is gender- and age-specific. For the run, the maximum score (60 pts) requires a faster time for younger members; the minimum passing time also relaxes with age. Push-up maximums decline with age, while the abdominal circumference thresholds differ between males and females. A composite of 75 or above is required to pass, but each component must also meet its own minimum — a very fast run cannot compensate for a failing abdominal circumference.

This calculator interpolates linearly between the published maximum and minimum-passing breakpoints from AFI 36-2905 (2023 values). Official scoring tables contain a row for each second of run time and each push-up repetition; interpolation introduces small rounding differences from the official table. Always verify your score using the official mypers.af.mil calculator before a fitness test.

Frequently asked questions

As of 2023, the minimum composite score to pass is 75 out of 100. However, each component also has its own minimum: airmen must not exceed the maximum abdominal circumference (39.0 in for males, 35.5 in for females), must complete at least the minimum push-up repetitions, and must finish the run within the time limit for their age and gender. Failing any component results in an overall PFA failure regardless of composite score.

Most active-duty Air Force members are required to take the PFA annually. Those who score "Excellent" (90 or above) may be eligible for a 24-month testing interval. Members who fail may be tested more frequently and are subject to Fitness Improvement Programs (FIP). Reserve and Guard members have different testing requirements.

Yes — the Air Force has revised its PFA multiple times in recent years. The 2020 revision removed sit-ups, replacing them with abdominal circumference as the body-composition metric. Walk tests and alternative aerobic options (stationary bike, swimming) have also been incorporated for members with medical profiles. The 2023 standards used here reflect the most recent changes; always check mypers.af.mil for the current authoritative requirements.
