How does this calculator work?
Every AI query consumes data-centre cooling water: ~8 mL for small models, ~50 mL for GPT-4-class text, ~150 mL for frontier multimodal, ~300 mL for image generation (Li et al., 2023). Multiply by your daily query count and working days per year to get your annual AI water footprint in litres.

How this is calculated
Every time you send a prompt to an AI model, the data-centre processors that run the inference generate heat. That heat is removed by cooling systems — primarily chilled water that either flows through heat exchangers or evaporates in cooling towers. Research published in 2023 by Li et al. ("Making AI Less Thirsty") estimated that a typical GPT-3 exchange consumed about 10 mL of fresh water and a GPT-4-class exchange about 50 mL at US data centres in temperate climates. Compute-heavier tasks like image generation consume significantly more.
Water consumption varies enormously by data-centre location and cooling design. Facilities in cool, rainy climates (northern Europe, Pacific Northwest) can use air-side economisers much of the year and consume far less water than those in desert regions that rely on evaporative cooling year-round. Microsoft's 2023 Environmental Sustainability Report disclosed that its global data centres consumed around 6.4 million cubic metres of water that year, a 34% increase year-on-year, largely driven by AI workloads. The per-query figures used here are conservative midpoints for average US data-centre conditions.

Frequently asked questions
AI inference runs on GPUs and TPUs that draw hundreds of watts each. Data centres pack thousands of these chips into tight racks, generating enormous heat. Cooling that heat reliably and efficiently almost always involves water — either circulated through cold plates, chilled water loops or evaporative cooling towers. The more queries a model handles, the more cooling water is needed.
It's a growing one. Training a large model like GPT-4 reportedly consumed hundreds of thousands of litres. At current AI adoption rates, inference (the ongoing running of models for users) is becoming the dominant factor. In water-stressed regions, data-centre water use competes with agriculture and municipal supply — which is why siting decisions and cooling technology matter. Many providers are investing in waterless or low-water cooling systems.
A GPT-4-class query at ~50 mL is roughly a fifth of a standard glass of water, or about the same as flushing a toilet once (~6 L). A 20-query workday is roughly 1 L — comparable to brewing a cup of coffee (about 200 mL of water to grow the beans alone). The footprint is real but small compared to, say, a 150 g beef burger (~2,400 L of water in its production chain.
