Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Your exact age in years = elapsed milliseconds ÷ (365.25 × 86 400 000). A 25-year-old born on Jan 1, 2000 is approximately 25.4960 years old on July 1, 2025. The calculator also shows the classic years + months + days breakdown, total weeks, and total days — all from the same millisecond difference.

Formula
decimalAge = (refDate − birthDate) in ms / (365.25 × 86 400 000)
How this is calculated

The calculator produces two complementary age representations. The decimal age divides the elapsed milliseconds by the length of a Julian year (365.25 × 86 400 000 ms), giving a continuous real-valued age such as 25.3742. This format is used in actuarial science and research where fractional years matter.

The calendar breakdown counts exact years, months, and days sequentially: first it finds complete years, then the remaining whole months, then the leftover days. If the reference day-of-month is before the birth day-of-month, it borrows the number of days in the previous calendar month (so month-boundary rounding respects variable month lengths). This decomposition matches the intuitive age a person would state on any given day.

The progress bar reflects how far through the current year of life the reference date falls — from the last birthday to the next — giving a visual sense of how recently the last birthday occurred. Total weeks and days come from the raw millisecond difference and handle leap years automatically.

Frequently asked questions

Calendar age counts completed years (e.g., you are "25" until your 26th birthday). Decimal age is a real number that changes every second — someone born exactly 25.5 years ago has a decimal age of 25.5. Decimal age is used in medical and scientific contexts where continuous precision matters.

The Julian year of 365.25 days averages out the leap-year cycle (every 4 years one day is added). It is the standard astronomical year and gives a stable, timezone-independent decimal age.

The millisecond arithmetic handles Feb 29 correctly. For the calendar breakdown, JavaScript's Date object uses the actual calendar, including Feb 29 on leap years, so the day count is accurate.
